Why You Shouldn’t Burn Bridges

There are things in my life of which I’m very proud; a successful marriage, my daughter’s opera career, lifelong friendships, decades of giving back to the community. And 700+ Ask Mr. Marketing columns published.

Since 2006 I’ve provided 350,000+ words of free (and unpaid) business advice in the Pomerado Newspapers. They’ve built a lucrative business page around it.

Readers know my scribblings to be serious AND silly. Countless dozens have written for advice; some published, some private. I’ve made many new friends who recognize my signature hat and approach me at Albertsons to share an insight or suggest a worthwhile topic to explore.

I’ve been chastised for protocol breaches and publicly flayed at overcrowded dinner tables. Debates have raged regarding my strategies. Many without marketing needs read my work because it’s thoughtful, entertaining, and informative.

We’ve talked about branding, publicity, business plans, and every marketing tool imaginable. Few have forgotten my dog’s April Fool’s letter asking how to get more squeaky toys. It took me weeks to live down accidentally discussing a restaurant’s closing…when they hadn’t actually closed.

No, I’m not disappearing!

Mom taught me about tending relationships like a flower garden. I’ve followed her lesson, which probably explains why I rarely lose clients.

every business library!

Yet, despite my best efforts to reach Pomerado’s new editor, publication of my column has stopped. No reason…just silence. Not even an opportunity to say goodbye to my readers.

Sadly, this editor ignored a long-time business relationship and snubbed readers asking where I’d disappeared to. Arbitrarily ghosting a popular columnist reflects poorly on the editor and the newspapers she edits.

It’s a valuable lesson to always treat others with respect. You never know who they’re talking to about you.

Disappointed? You Bet! I’ve enjoyed addressing marketing challenges in the community, and I’ll never stop writing.

And I’m already talking with two other editors about opportunities for me to share my thoughts and advice with their readers. More on that soon, I hope.

As I continue reaching out to those thinking I’m a good fit with their publications, rest assured I’m still around.

Please keep those questions and comments coming. I look forward to our ongoing dialog, and hope you’ll continue sharing your thoughts.

After all, why stop doing something that’s fun and successful?

With that said, I wish you a happy and safe holiday season.
